Standings
Blazers 7-0
Whalehouse 6-1
Celtics 4-3
Rusty Aries 3-4
Wyverns 3-4
Woolies 2-5
Prestige Worldwide 0-7
Semis:
Celtics 47, Whalehouse 32
Whalehouse came up short to a hot shooting and aggressive celtics team. Mike Brown held it down on the inside and Chad Gosselin and Jimmy Setterlund got it done from the perimeter. John Bertram was the lone bright spot for the whale.
Blazers 52, Rusty Aries 38
Too much Rob Elliot and Matt Jolie for the Blazers- Josh Dunton and Bill Monaco carried the load for the Aries, game that was closer than the score indicated.
Playoffs:
Celtics 63, Woolies 55
A great tip off to the playoffs. The Celtics took a 2 point lead into the second half behind the scoring of Jimmy Setterlund. Setterlund would also key an early second half run to get the lead to as many as 19 (he would finish with 28 points) also keying that run for the Celtics was Anthony Penta 12 points and Chad Gosselin 15 points. Trailing by 15 with 5 minutes to go the Woolies looked done, but it's the BVBL everyone makes a run! Keyed by the outside shooting of Brett Corey (20 points) and the inside post play of Brian Genese (7 points) and the floor leadership of Andy Maxwell (11 points) The Woolies got it as close as 5 with 1:15 to go, but the C's would hang on for the victory and a bearth in the semi finals!
Rusty Aries 52, Wyverns 40
Timmy Sundone paced the Wyvenrs with 14 and Ryan Bunce chipped in 9 and double digit rebounds but the Aries just had too much firepower. Billy Monaco continued his big season with 17 points, Briand Whitten tossed in 12, Josh Dunton 10 and Brian Collins 8 as the Aries fought their way into the semis. They will face the undefeated Blazers who had a first round bye.
Whalehouse 94, Prestige Worldwide 62
Prestige Worldwide put up enough points to win almost any game in this league. Kofi Ageyman lead them with 19, Kyle Ducharme added 18 and Mark Rudge 11 in the losing effort. Whalehouse came out flying high and got a ridiculous offensive performance from Kris Johnson (32 points, 10 threes), RC Grady (30 points) and Kevin Wentworth (26 points). Also it should be noted that while this league does not track assists. The conservative estimate from those watching had Jeff Lindgren with at least 10 assists and Mitch Bajema with at least 13. The Whale will face off with The Celtics in the semi finals!
Week 7
Woolies 60, Prestige Worldwide 51
The Woolies broke a 5 game losing streak behind the passing of Andy Maxwell and a balanced scoring attack lead by Brett Corey (17 points), Kyle Dean (14 points) and Scotty Elie (10 points). Prestige Worldwide hung tough behind Andrew Hippert 10 points and Kyle Ducharme 10 points. Prestige Worldwide will enter the playoffs as the 7 seed, the Woolies hold the 6.
Blazers 45, Celtics 35
Old school Eastern Conference basketball! A low scoring affair. Mike Howe and Rob Elliot both had 10 for the winners and Jimmy Setterlund added 23 for the losers. Setterlund accounted for an amazing 65% of the Celtics points. The Blazers would return to action later in the night- The Celtics even in defeat lock up the 3 seed.
Whalehouse 74, Rusty Aries 58
The Aries had 4 in double figure: Monaco with 16, Taylor with 11, Whitten with 14 and Dunton with 10. They jumped out to a quick lead, but RC Grady quickly hit 4 threes on his way to thirty points and a Whalehouse victory. Also contributing for The Whale was Kevin Wentworth with 12, Kris Johnson with 18 and Mitch Bajema running the offense. John Bertram also cleaned the boards for the Whale who will enter the playoffs as the 2 seed. Rusty Aries will hold the 4 seed.
Blazers 58, Wyverns 43
A Game that was much closer than it's final score. Scotty Felper and Chris Gaffney got the Wyverns going early in that they jumped out to a 13-2 lead. The Blazers are a first place team for a reason though and methodically closed the gap before opening one of their own behind the play of Rob Elliot (12), Jon Young (12) Matt Jolie (12) and TJ Dolliver (11). Young threw down 2 transition dunks to cap the game and send the Blazers to the playoffs as the one seed. Wyverns will enter as the 5.
Player Of The Week: RC Grady, Whalehouse. 30 points in a win will usually get it done
Week 6
Rusty Aries 53, Wyverns 44
The Wyverns jumped out to as much as an 11 point lead in the first half behind the play of Joey McCann (17 points) and Scott Felper (9 points) they were lead on the boards by Ryan Bunce. The Aries however found their stroke at the half as Josh Dunton threw in 13 (mostly from outside) and Brian Collins hit for 11. The story for the Aries today though was Billy Monaco who scored 19 almost all on face up jumpers (and a dunk). When he's making shots he's tough to handle. The Aries conclude their season with Whalehouse next Sunday, while the Wyverns will face the first place Blazers.
Whalehouse 62, Prestgie Worldwide 55
Prestige Worldwide is the best 0-6 team anywhere giving Whalehouse all that they could handle: Dave Rahall had 17 in defeat and Andrew Hippert tossed in 10. For the Whale Kevin Wentworth had 25, Mitch Bajema had 13 and a very solid floor game. Jeff Lindgren chipped in 13 and in the second half they really got a lift from Joe Regan in the post (8 points) Prestige will face the Woolies next week for a huge game as far as seeding goes, while The Whale will take on Rusty Aries.
Celtics 82, Woolies 49
The Celtics are playing their best ball of the session and the Woolies were a little short handed. Those combined for an ugly game. The Woolies got 11 out of Brett Corey and 9 out of Joe Reidy and Scotty Elie respectively. The Celtics were lead by Mike Brown with 20, Jimmy Setterlund with 17 and Chad Gosselin with 14. They improve to 4-2 and lock up the #3 seed. They will play the Blazers next week. The Woolies will face Prestige in a huge seeding game.
Player Of The Week Billy Monaco, Rusty Aries. 19 points and kept the Aries alive when no one else was hitting in the first half in their win over the Wyverns.
Week 5
Whalehouse 77, 508 Athletics 56
Chris Barry's 12 and Pat Rossi's 11 paced the 508 Athletics team, but there was just too much Kevin Wentworth and RC Grady who both had 29 points in the victory. The rest of the Whalehouse offense was provided by new addition Mitch Bajema on his quest to get playoff eligible he dropped 14 in his debut.
Wyverns 46, Prestige Worldwide 39
Scott Felper's 10 and Joey McCann's 11 helped the Wyverns (3-2) hold off the Prestige Worldwide ball club. Prestige was lead by Kyle Ducharme with ten and some long range gunning by Jordan Stolle who hit a couple of DEEP threes.
Celtics 42, Rusty Aries 35
In an old school Eastern Conference basketball game this one was tied at 14-14 at the half. Josh Dunton (12) and Brian Whitten (11) put the Aries in the drivers seat for a bit, but Jimmy Setterlund (12) kept the Celtics close. Then it was Jeremy Geary time (14 points, 11 in the second half) who connected on all 4 his attempted 3's and swung the game over to the Celtics.
Blazers 65, Woolies 51
The Woolies behind the play of Andy Maxwell (12) and Kyle Dean (12) gave the league leaders everything they could handle. With 4 minutes to go the game was tied, however Rob Elliot and Joey Saster hit deep threes sandwiched around a John Young and1 to post a 9-0 run and take control. For the Blazers balance was the story as Elliot posted 11, Mike Howe 11, Tj Dolliver 10, John Young 12 and Matt Jolie 9. The Blazers remain undefeated.
Player Of The Week Kevin Wentworth, Whalehouse. Dropped 29 as the Whalehouse got back in the win column.
Week 4
Rusty Aries 55, Woolies 53
Billy Monaco hit a shot with 3 seconds left to take the game for the Aries. Brian Collins lead all Aries scorers with 15 and Brian Whitten added 13. For the Woolies Brett Corey continued his consistent play with 10. Scott Elie was a factor on the boards.
Celtics 60, Wyverns 46
Mike Brown's 14 and Chad Gosselin's 13 points lead the Celtics to victory over the Wyvens. Joey McCann threw in 10 for the Wyverns with Scott Felper adding 9.
Wyverns 48, 508 Athletics 38
The Wyverns bounced back in their second game of the night. Joey McCann leading the way with 14. It was close throughout but the Wyverns pulled away late.
Blazers 56, Prestige Worldwide 46
The Blazers stay undefeated behind the inside play of Mike Howe (20) and John Young (17). Prestige Worldwide hung in behind the shooting of Dave Rahal (15).
Week 4 Player Of The Week Mike Howe of the Blazers' 20 Points and kept his team undefeated.
Week 3
Celtics 50, Prestige Worldwide 39
Behind the inside play of Mike Brown (10 points) the outside play of Chad Gosselin (15 points) and a stifling defense The Celtics cracked the win column with a 11 point victory over Prestige Worldwide. Ryan Hippert lead Prestige with 13 poimts. Joe Sullivan chipped in 8. The Celtics advance to 1-2 while Prestige Worldwide heads into week 4 at 0-3
Wyverns 48, Woolies 47
The Wyverns cruised into the half with a 30-19 lead but the Woolies came storming back behind the outside shooting of Brett Corey ( 17 points) and the scoring off the dribble by Andy Maxwell (10 points) Kyle Dean lead them on the boards. In the end there was too much Timmy Sundunn (20 points) and too much Scott Felper (11). The Woolies got a look at a 3 point shot for the tie at the horn, but Brett Corey put it back in with a few seconds left to cut the lead to 1, but it was too late. The Woolies head into week 4 at 1-2 and The Wyverns now stand at 1-1
508 Athletics 56, Rusty Aries 44
The Rusty Aries lead by Brian Whitten (15 points) and Brian Collins (10 points) made it interesting but there was too much Chris Barry (11 points) and too much Mike Flemming (25 points). The 508 Athletics club was lead defensively by Shaun Brown and on the glass by Alex Bernard. Rusty Aries moves their record to 1-2 and 508 improves to 2-1
Blazers 79, Whalehouse 70 (OT)
40 Minutes was not enough time to settle this one between the previously undefeated Whalehouse team and the currently undefeated Blazers team. Despite Kevin Wentworth's 29 points and Kris Johnson's 20 the Blazers held the day. A missed putback at the buzzer by Anthony Leonelli opened the door for the Blazers and Rob Elliot (16 points) and Mike Howe (14 points) came through it. Jon Young lead the way for the Blazers with 20 points. Elliot was especially strong at the line down the stretch as the Blazers iced it.
Week 3 Player Of The Week: John Young Blazers His 20 points in an overtime win kept The Blazers undefeated.
Week 2
Whalehouse 63, Celtics 44
Battling the snow to get there the Celtics and Whalehouse squared off in the day's first game. The Celtics lead by Chad Gosselin (9 points) and Anthony Penta (10 points) held tight for a half, but Whalehouse broke it open in the second behind Kevin Wentworth's 21 points. Kris Johnson and RC Grady each added 17 for the Whale.
Whalehouse 80, Woolies 57
Whalehouse playing a rare double header (due to the Wyverns having travel issues) took on a depleted Woolies squad. Brett Corey lead the way for the Woolies with 21 points. Joe Reidey kicked in 14. The Whale was lead by 30 from RC Grady and 26 from Kris Johnson. John Bertram and Joe Reagan held down the boards for the now 3-0 Whalehouse club.
508 Athletics 53, Prestige Worldwide 46
The game of the night! Zach Peloquin lead 508 Athletics in the block with 12 points and Pat Rossi (8 points) and Chris Barry (8 points) added extra offense. For Prestige Ryan Hippert lead the way with 14 and Joe Sullivan chipped in 8. The game was 22-21 508 at the half, in the second 508 went on a 8-0 run spear headed by a Bobby Adams layup and a Drew Smithson put back and took the lead for good. Dave Rahall would lead a late run for Prestige but 508 held on and got in the win column.
Blazers 54, Rusty Aries 38
The Blazers jumped out behind the hot shooting of Joey Saster (16 points) and the inside out play of Mike Howe (13 points). Rusty Aries made a few runs behind Brian Collins (11 points) and Brody Reese (8 points). Rob Elliot playing the role of a distributor kept the Blazers offense in sync in the second half as TJ Dolliver and Dan MacDonald chipped in from the outside. Billy Monaco added 9 for the Aries all in the second half.
Week 2 Player Of The Week: RC Grady Whalehouse. Had the advantage of playing 2 games but either of his games could have been POTY worthy. Averaged 23.5 points and a LOT of rebounds in his 2 games.
Week 1
Whalehouse 59, Wyverns 43
The first game of the BVBL Winter session (ever!) got off to a slow start as both teams tried to shake off the rain and put the ball in the bucket. Whalehouse built a 17 point halftime lead and extended to as many as 25 in the second half behind RC Grady (18 points) and Kevin Wentworth (15 points) The Wyverns were lead by Scott Felper (ex BOHICA) who dropped 16 and Tony Stumbrus running the floor.
Rusty Aries 50, Prestige Worldwide 45
A slightly new look Rusty Aries team had the same result as in the summer with a 5 point victory. Billy Monaco was the man for the Aries club as he tossed in 19 points. Josh Dunton (Summer co-MVP) tossed in 9 of his own and Brian Collins (a new addition had a steady floor game) For Prestige (a new look team with some familiar faces) Dave Rahall had 13 and a balanced attack kept them in the game.
Woolies 60, 508 Athletics 34
As we've seen in the summer league it always takes the free agent teams a while to get going (they were also done a diservice missing point guard Steve Dorsey and 6'5 forward Drew Smithson) however Chris Bradley paced them with 9 points and Andrew Gover and Pat Rossi showed some toughness on the defensive end. For the Woolies it was about solid team play and the outside shooting of Brett Corey who hung 21 in his first outing of the year. Scott Elie added 10.
Blazers 48, Celtics 32,
Joey Saster's 18 point outburst lead the Blazers over the Celtics in the final game of "rivalry week", outside of Saster it was a balanced attack featuring Rob Elliot, Mike Howe and TJ Dolliver. The Celtics were lead by Chad Gosselin with 10 and Anthony Penta with 9.
Week One Player Of The Week: Joey Saster Blazers, 18 points your first trip out is nothing to sneeze at.
